Enjoy Dinner & a Movie at ChathamArts' 100-Mile Sustainable Cinema Series.

Showing in December: The Empowerment Project's documentary film, "Gatewood," scheduled for screening and filmmaker Q&A on December 9th at the Pittsboro General Store Cafe. Also shown with short doc, "Mary's Gone Wild."

At 7:00 pm on December 9th, ChathamArts, the Chatham County Arts Council presents the latest double feature in their 100-Mile Sustainable Cinema Series:


"Gatewood: Facing the White Canvas" Co-Directors/Producers: David Kasper, Carlyle Poteat, Chapel Hill. In this revealing hour-length documentary, Maud Gatewood gives us insight into the determination and creative process that have led to her becoming one of the most admired painters to emerge from the American South. For over 50 years Maud Gatewood has been an inspired laborer, producing an extraordinary body of work. Honors have come to her as a painter, an advocate of the arts, and an active citizen. The Empowerment Project produces and distributes its own documentary films and videos, and provides facilities, training and other support for independent producers, artists, activists and organizations working in video and other electronic media. Its purpose is to work towards democratizing access to the media, and to provide the resources necessary to put the power of media in the hands of individuals and organizations working to further important social, political and artistic purposes. This film will be also be shown with "Mary's Gone Wild" a short documentary by Blaire Johnson on North Carolina folk artist Mary Paulsen. Visionary Folk Artist Mary Paulsen has been putting smiles on people's faces with her brightly painted windows and her magical garden in Holden Beach, NC since 1996. Through her creative, fun-loving recycling, Mary has kept thousands of lbs of trash out of her local landfill by turning the unwanted trash and treasures of her community into bright, happy art to help feed hungry children in America and throughout the world. Mary Paulsen and her Mary's Gone Wild Folk Art Garden are one of North Carolinas greatest treasures and her work is now collected around the world. http://marysgonewild.com


Starting in January, the Sustainable Cinema Series will run monthly at 7 pm every last Tuesday. The series features documentaries and independent films involving producers, directors, subjects and/or locations within 100 miles of Pittsboro. Proceeds benefit ChathamArts, which promotes and presents the arts through monthly cultural programs & events, artists residencies in the schools and community, gallery exhibits, and other community building efforts.
