As layoffs continue on a daily basis here in North Carolina, local unemployment offices have become inundated with those looking for help.

“I'm looking everywhere trying to find work,” said Sean Anderson, who arrived by bike at the unemployment office on Raleigh’s Carl Sandburg Court.

“I’m trying to make ends meet, and I got a week to  come up with my rent. That's $350 right there.”

Right now, Sean Anderson doesn't have employment benefits.

“They haven't come in yet. They're still making a determination on mine.”

Until that time, Sean will ride his leg-powered, two-wheeled form of transportation to and from the unemployment office and to job interviews.

Inside the state's busiest unemployment office at 4 p.m. on a Monday, clients wait, and wait, and wait.

“You go out and try and find work, then you come here and wait for eight hours,” said David Beatty.

“I've been here since 10 a.m. and I still haven't been able to clear the information I need because the lines are too long."

On the other side of the room. Shakur Williams sits at a computer terminal and goes through a year's worth of applications hoping he won't have to keep relying on state assistance.

“You don't have much of a budget,” he confides.  “If you get state benefits you don't have much money to work with because you have to pay your bills, pay for food and set money aside for transportation.”

And, it's not just unemployed folks who are coming here.

“There are rumors every day of this company, of that company cutting back,” said office manager Leon Perry. “That means the folks who might be affected want to get ahead of the situation and come down here, and it’s been quite busy."
