CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -

These PLENTies may look nothing like the greenbacks we know, but the currency has been used for sometime as a bartering tool between local businesses in Chatham County.

Now, Capital Bank in Pittsboro is putting their money where the PLENTY is. Cecil Walters with the bank said they're backing the bills with U.S. currency.

"We have worked out a deal that it's backed by U.S. dollars. It's safe," Walters said.

The bank has released brand new bills with an exchange rate of $.90 for one PLENTY. Now, businesses like the Chatham Marketplace are trying to get more people using the money. Mary DeMare with the Marketplace said they've recently seen an increase in users of the PLENTY.

"Already today we've seen $80 through the register. That's considerably more than we normally have," DeMare said.

Stephanie Arndt with the Corner Store Café said she has also seen a change.

"I know six months ago we got a PLENTY every six weeks but now we're seeing them numerous times a week." Arndt said.

They also want to see cash continue to flow within the county.

"It's important for the community to make sure that the currency stays in the area," DeMare said.

Now that the PLENTY is backed by the bank, business owners say it gives their customers peace of mind.

"There are muscles behind it and a real bank so people feel more comfortable," Arndt said.

The Pittsboro branch of Capital Bank is the only location that will exchange the PLENTies and not all businesses in Chatham County accept the bills.
