Seniors in Chatham Count will stay cool on sweltering days like these thanks to a donation from Progress Energy.
The company donated $1,000 to the Chatham County Council on Aging to buy fans for about 50 elderly people..
People can pick their fans up at the senior centers located in Pittsboro and Siler City. Senior Pauline Eves said this is a necessity during hot weather.
"I think it's very important because a lot of people can't afford to buy fans. I think it's nice for the Council on Aging to buy fans for those who can afford fans," Eves said.
Seniors can also visit the center for activities and to cool off. Executive Director for the Council on Aging Angel Dennison said they want to help as many seniors as possible.
"This is primarily for low income families who really need the heat relief but really the only real requirement is to be 60 years old," Dennison said.
Dennison encourages family members and neighbors to check on their elderly friends and loved ones when temperatures get hot.
