Hanesbrands, Inc. announced it is closing its plant in Sanford. The underwear and hosiery manufacturing plant currently employs about 150.
According to the Associated Press, Hanesbrands plans to sell its yarn manufacturing operations in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia to Parkdale, and close the Sanford facility.
"We were devastated to have another plant announcement like this," said Bob Joyce, president of the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce. "Our community has been particularly hard hit."
The most recently released figures show Lee County has an unemployment rate of 14.7 percent, among the highest in the state.

they are actually doing away with the positions...they have lots of plants already oversees...yes it is sad...hanesbrands is just greedy!!!

Are they actually doing away with the positions or just moving them overseas to where they can pay workers pennies per hour for the same job? Corporate greed kills another town in the name of "staying competitive", which actually means maintaining the CEO's multimillion dollar salary. Very sad.
