Two days after the remains of Kelly Currin Morris were found, her family has seen some resolution to the case when the local sheriff announced an arrest in the case.
Kelly's husband Scott stands accused of her murder.
"I knew this day would come eventually," Kelly's mother, Wanda Hollis, said.
It took 14 months for the Granville County sheriff to arrest Scott Morris.
"It's like a brick is lifted off your chest," Hollis said. "You don't know what it's like until you go through it. It's unbelievably deep."
Kelly's murder also cut deeply into the heart of the tiny town of Stem, where she lived.
"It's just as hard now as it was the day after it happened," contends Stem resident Darlene Van Hook. "It doesn't matter how long -- it's still a hurtful thing.
For 14 months, one man coordinated search efforts. In the first few days, the search hoped to find Kelly alive. But later it became an effort to find Kelly's remains to give the family closure.
"It tugs at you," search coordinator Al Mignicci said. "You get moved by it -- eating and sleeping the case. You can't let go."
For months after Kelly disappeared, Mignicci coordinated daily searchers. Later, it was every weekend.
"It means a lot to a family when you have a search team out there every week looking," said Wanda.
And although Kelly has been found, her presence won't disappear from Hook's convenience store.
"I'm not taking the poster down for a while. I'll leave the ribbons up too. Kelly deserves to know people still care," Van Hook said.
As for Scott Morris, he remains in jail held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 2.
