A group of Triangle teens is giving up two weeks out of their summer vacations to volunteer.

They're taking part in the Boys and Girls Clubs' "Volunteen" program.

"It gives teens an opportunity to give back to their community, it gives them the chance to get real life job experience and it gives the Boys and Girls Clubs a chance to have extra hands and eyes, free of charge, here at the club," said Raleigh Girls Club Director Nikki Graves.

17-year-old Charmy Samuels is a "volunteen" at the Raleigh Girls Club.

A soon-to-be senior at Middle Creek High School, Charmy says she's getting more out of this experience than the kids are.

"You get to learn a lot from the little kids, and you wouldn't think that they would teach you stuff but they really do," said Charmy.

These are lessons that Charmy says she can take with her for the rest of her life.

"They're younger and so they don't I guess tend to understand better so it's taught me how to explain myself better and to like take the time out to listen."

It's a win-win for Charmy and the little ones, who get to see positive role models.

And for a girl who has all brothers, volunteering at the Girls club gives her a chance to have hundreds of little sisters -- even if it is just for two weeks.

The boys and girls clubs not only have an affordable camp in the summer, but it also runs an after school program during the academic year.

The organization gets some funding through the Triangle United Way, but the rest comes from individuals and corporations.
