RALEIGH, N.C. -

A North Carolina commission Gov. Beverly Perdue assembled to dig into how the state spends its money sits down to find wasteful spending.

The Budget Reform and Accountability Commission holds its first meeting on Tuesday. Members are sitting down to work about three weeks after the General Assembly passed the current spending plan.

The waste-hunting commission has taken a while to get going. The panel was one of Perdue's campaign promises last year. She signed an executive order on her first day in office in January to create the team. Perdue appointed the panel's members in March.

The commission's goal will be setting out a list of recommendations before next year's legislative session starts in May.
