Six North Carolinians are about to receive the highest civilian honor the state bestows.
The North Carolina Award will be given out Thursday evening by Gov. Beverly Perdue and Cultural Resources Secretary Linda Carlisle at the state Museum of History in Raleigh. The annual awards have been presented since 1964.
Receiving the award this year are: poet Gerald Barrax of Raleigh for literature; scientist Joseph DeSimone of Chapel Hill for science; former Cultural Resources Secretary Betty Ray McCain of Wilson and former Bank of America CEO Hugh McColl of Charlotte for
public service; glass artist Mark Peiser of Penland and Cape Fear Regional Theater artistic director Bo Thorp of Fayetteville for fine arts.

I would like to see Mike Pedneau former Deputy of the Willie M. Program & Laura Winslow be so honored. There service to children in North Carolina has been lengthy and superlative.
