FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville police are investigating why there was an hour-long delay in sending officers to the home where a real estate developer killed his family and then himself, despite a breathless emergency call that captured a gunshot.

Fayetteville Police Department spokeswoman Theresa Chance said Friday the 74-minute delay in dispatching officers is part of an internal investigation.

Authorities say William Maxwell shot and killed 43-year-old wife Kathryn and their two teenage children on Monday. The first of two 911 calls captured someone quietly moaning before a gunshot erupts.

Chance said officers were ordered to the scene nine minutes before Kathryn Maxwell's parents made a second 911 call reporting they saw bodies and blood through a window.
